Common Questions People Have About Long-Term Care Insurance
Looking into long-term care insurance is a great idea, especially as people move through their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. Long-term care insurance may never be needed, but with people living longer and preferring to remain at home, or ‘aging in place,’ the cost of long-term care continues to rise.
Here are four common questions people often ask about this type of insurance when they first hear about it or begin considering it.
Common Question #1: What is it?
This is an insurance policy that can begin paying out in the event the policyholder or anyone else named in the policy requires some type of long-term care. In every policy there are going to be provisions about what types of physical or mental illnesses or issues constitute requiring long-term care.
This can include coverage for in-home care services, including home health care, assisted living, nursing home, and a wide range of other basic care services that provide comfort and support to those in need.
Common Question #2: Do I really need it?
This is a big question. A lot of people would rather not spend money on an insurance policy if they don’t think it’s necessary. What people need to do when they have this type of question is turn around and consider life insurance or automobile insurance.
Yes, automobile insurance is a requirement, but what if it wasn’t? There would probably be a long line of people looking to drop their insurance coverage because they’re safe drivers and don’t think they’ll ever be involved in an accident.
Most people don’t think what could happen in the event they have a medical emergency, require major surgery, or are injured in an accident and may have a difficult time recovering. It could take many weeks or even months to recover. Family and friends may certainly be able to help, but nothing is going to be better at encouraging a good recovery than experienced care and that can cost money.
Common Question #3: What if I can’t afford it?
Obviously, if a person can’t afford long-term care insurance they shouldn’t be encouraged to carry it. However, if a person could pay for this if they only made minor changes, such as skipping coffee at their local favorite coffee shop twice a week, then it’s something to seriously consider and get a quote.
Common Question #4: Where should I get it?
Choose a legitimate insurance company with experienced brokers. Make sure the company is legitimate, has great backing, and is going to be around for the duration of the policy itself.
Of course, no one can predict the future, but the larger insurance companies or those that are backed up by powerful companies are the best ones to consider.
