Long-Term Care Insurance Premiums: Don’t Assume You Won’t Need Long-Term Care Because No One in Your Family Did
Your family history is pretty impressive. As far as you can tell, nobody in your family has ever needed any type of long-term care. So, knowing that, why would you ever need to consider long-term care insurance? Get to know more about why you may need long-term care and long-term care insurance premiums.
In reality, it makes no sense, right? However, that is not reality. Most people assume a lot of things that are not actually factual. Maybe your mother is in her 80’s or 90’s and hasn’t required any major medical service or short or long-term care. Perhaps your father was 72 when he passed away from a heart attack.
Maybe everything you know about your aunts and uncles is pretty basic. Yet, are you certain that no one, absolutely not one individual, has ever faced any serious medical emergencies, calamities, or lengthy stays in a hospital or nursing home setting?
Most people honestly don’t know all the details about their family members.
Maybe you never realized your paternal grandmother had been diagnosed with a form of dementia. You never heard that story before. Or that your maternal grandfather had a heart attack in his 60’s.
That might not seem like a big deal, especially these days, but a heart attack is serious business. It can not only lead to immediate fatality, but for somebody to survive that, it may mean a lengthy recovery process.
What about aneurysms or strokes? What about complications and side effects of all these prescription medications that are on the rise these days? There are many factors in today’s lifestyles that are different than they were for our grandparents or great-grandparents. Life today is so much different than it was for even our own parents and today’s young generation is experiencing things middle-aged people can’t even fathom.
The point is … just because you may not think (or you assume) that nobody in your family has ever required long-term care, that’s probably not the reality.
Yet, you have no idea what tomorrow will bring.
Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that nobody in your family has ever required any major medical support or long-term care. That’s a wonderful thing, but the extreme exception to every rule out there.
However, life is moving at a much faster pace these days than ever before. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. People in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and so on have had their lives completely upended and changed in one split second.
It could be taking a bad step down concrete steps in the snow or pouring rain. It could be a slight distraction while behind the wheel, and it doesn’t even have to be you who was distracted. A million things can happen that lead to serious injuries, mishaps, and emergencies.
What if you or your spouse or other immediate dependent requires long-term care? Are you willing and able to pay all those expenses out-of-pocket? Could you afford $50,000 per year? $300,000 a year? Think those numbers are out of control? That’s the averages for different types of long-term care.
If either of those numbers surprise you, contact an agent and talk about long-term care insurance and long-term care insurance premiums today.
