Some of the Toughest Life Lessons We Learn Help Us Realize the True Value in Long-Term Care Insurance
It was a cold winter morning when Tom got the call. His father had fallen down the stairs and was in the hospital. He took off from work and rushed more than three hours to the hospital to meet up with his mother and sister. The fall was devastating, but he survived. The doctors told Tom’s mother it would likely take months and months for him to work through recovery, tireless exercise, and physical therapy just to get back some mobility.
Before the accident neither Tom’s mother or father even contemplated the need for long-term care.
They were in good health. In their 70’s they traveled a lot, worked around the yard, planted a garden, spent time with friends, volunteered at church, and did so many other things. They seemed to be busier than Tom and his own wife in their 40’s.
That all changed in one instant. When Tom’s father was discharged and sent home, his mother said she would be his primary caregiver and support him in any way he needed, but was quickly overwhelmed with so much to do and the physical challenge of trying to help him out of bed, into and out of the shower, going out to the living room, and even exercising.
They understood that long-term care was needed.
They relied on home care aides through an agency. It was one of the best assets they could’ve counted on and it certainly made a significant difference in his recovery, but it cost them a fortune. Medicaid wasn’t going to provide any financial relief because they had too many assets. They burned through almost their entire retirement savings, cashed in his life insurance policy for a significant loss based on what they put in and would have received when he passed away, and even counted on family and friends for some help.
After a year, Tom’s father was finally able to take care of himself safely and in a healthy manner. But, his parents were broke. That’s when Tom realized the importance of planning ahead. Most people don’t even believe they would need long-term care of any kind, but it happens every single day all across the country.
Tom understood the true value of long-term care insurance and started a policy before he turned 50. It protected him and his wife in the event either of them would need long-term care now, in the event of an accident or health emergency, or sometime in the future when their physical capabilities diminished.
