Three Reasons Long-Term Care Should Be a Discussion to Have with Your Spouse

What about long-term care insurance?

This may not be a topic you have broached with your husband or wife just yet, but if not, why not? Why haven’t you talked about this? Is it because you haven’t really thought about it much? Maybe it’s not a topic you’ve ever come across before.

There are many great reasons why long-term care should be a topic to discuss, and we mention three of them right here.

Reason #1: You don’t know what the future holds.

No one knows what the future holds. Yes, you can do all sorts of planning, and you may be in great physical condition and have very little family history of serious health issues, at least until people get into their late 70’s or 80’s, but that doesn’t mean we won’t need long-term care.

An accident can happen at any time. You could be the most diligent person behind the wheel, but you can still be involved in an accident that causes serious injuries. What if you needed long-term care for eight, nine, or 10 months? That can be financially devastating for many families.

Reason #2: You want to protect your finances.

You are saving for retirement. You may have a portfolio that will keep you and your spouse financially secure for 20 years or more, but an accident or unexpected health emergency can change all that.

If you need long-term care, you won’t be eligible for Medicaid or Medicare support until your financial resources are almost exhausted. Spending $50,000 a year on home care support services may be just the tip of the iceberg.

Reason #3: You want the best support for your future.

In the event you require any type of long-term care or your spouse has a medical emergency that requires long-term care, don’t you want the best for both of you? If you do, it’s going to cost you a lot of money. Paying the premiums for long-term care insurance to cover these expenses will buy you the help you may need.

These are just three simple reasons why it’s such a good idea to begin talking about long-term care with your spouse. If you don’t, you could be putting one or both of you at risk and exposing yourself financially to some extreme hardships in the future.
